Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening to all of you! I am pleased to present the results of FemHype’s latest survey! We had 160 respondents to the question of who your favorite video game siblings are, which I am totally floored by. Your interpretations and thoughts are so valuable to this investigation, and an impressive 46 examples of video game siblings were brainstormed.
We’ll be splitting your feedback into this fun little (well, actually pretty long) list, “Thick as Thieves,” and a more in-depth analysis of the whys and hows of sibling relationships will be coming up next. If you don’t see one of your choices represented here, you may see them in the next article — so stay tuned for that.
Without further waffling, here is the data on just who your faves are! As respondents could choose multiple answers, these percentages won’t tot up to 100%.
20/21/22. Crash & Coco Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot) + Chris Redfield & Claire Redfield (Resident Evil) + Dante & Vergil (Devil May Cry)
Personally, I’m not familiar with any of these games, but I had to include this because the combination of these characters tying at the same spot amused me. I can just about imagine Chris, Claire, Dante, and Vergil joining forces with a dramatic pan across the waves of enemies, only to return back to our skilled, valiant, and high-res heroes.
And Crash and Coco are there, too. It sounds like a dream you have after you’ve eaten too much margarita pizza.
18/19. Solid Snake & Liquid Snake (Metal Gear Solid) + Edgar Figaro & Sabin Figaro (Final Fantasy VI)
Sharing the place of 18th/19th, we have twins destined for greatness. No guesses as to which of the two sets of brothers have the slightly more positive relationship.
Still, it tells us that as much as we like siblings who are unified against all odds, we continue to like a bit of ~*drama*~.
17. Naiee & Naia (Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons)
The brothers of … well, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons complement each other in gameplay mechanics, requiring the player to use the characters’ skills and personalities simultaneously to complete puzzles as they journey to save their ailing father’s life. It is this fact — combined with their heavy emotional backstory and character development — that earns them a spot in players’ minds.
16. Timmy & Tommy Nook (Animal Crossing)
Tom Nook’s store clerks surprised me by gaining a spot on this list! Maybe you all regard youth entrepreneurialism highly, or that you like actually being able to enter Nook’s shops and not be reminded of your ginormous mortgage. Plus, they’re adorable.
15. Asher & Beskha (Telltale’s Game of Thrones)
Only just ahead of the twin raccoons are the mercenary brother-sister pair from Essos. They’re not blood-related, but it’s a testament to their badassery, loyalty, and humor that they attained 6.8% of the votes for your favorite siblings in games. Also, buy me Telltale’s Game of Thrones, please and thanks.
13/14. Lana Skye & Ema Skye + Apollo Justice & Trucy Wright (Ace Attorney)
Siblings in Ace Attorney appear more than once on this page, which I’m sure fans of the games will be delighted to hear. Lana and Ema Skye and Apollo and Trucy share 7.5% of the votes, earning praise in the way that this series depicts the positive relationship and understanding between family members.
12. Isabelle & Digby (Animal Crossing)
It’s comforting to think that with all the chaotic things going on in everyone’s lives right now, we can come together over our admiration for dapper dogs dedicated to interior design. The twins snag 8.7% of votes in 12th place.
11. Evie Frye & Jacob Frye (Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate)
You had nothing but praise for the assassin twins, despite being like chalk and cheese in play style and personality. You cited their relationship as one of the most authentic and enjoyable to engage with. Evie was the first playable woman assassin, and Jacob was confirmed to be canonically bisexual, marking a step forward in diversity that may have swayed them into some players’ hearts.
9/10. Labelle, Sable, & Mabel Able (Animal Crossing) + Mia Fey & Maya Fey (Ace Attorney)
I am charmed by how much you love the Animal Crossing series. I’m also being slowly convinced that I should play Ace Attorney. I was like ‘Hey, give me examples of positive sibling relationships’ and the Ace Attorney fans were like ‘They’re right here. I can’t believe you missed this.’ And now I feel embarrassed.
The hedgehog seamstresses share 13.7% of the votes with the defense attorney and spirit medium sisters.
8. Mario & Luigi (Super Mario Bros.)
They are, potentially, the most famous set of siblings in video games ever. But that wasn’t enough to decimate the competition, so the brothers plumb must settle for 8th place with 14.9% of your votes.
7. Beth, Hannah, & Josh Washington (Until Dawn)
The Washington siblings of Until Dawn amassed 16.8% of the votes. Arguably one of the more … intense familial relationships, players appreciated Beth, Hannah, and Josh’s protectiveness and playful friendship with one another — notwithstanding what Blackwood Mountain had lurking in the shadows.
6. Genji Shimada & Hanzo Shimada (Overwatch)
The bowman and ninja team are the newest kids on the block! They’re proof that you could brutally murder your annoying younger brother — causing their body to be almost totally reconstructed with cybernetics in order to save their life. When you meet said younger brother cyborg ten years later, he kicks your ass, but spares your life in a temple. Despite the fact that you’re still murderous (yet sort of conflicted) towards him, you’ll have fans. It’s that ~*drama*~ thing again.
5. Rosalind Lutece & Robert Lutece (BioShock: Infinite)
The kooky ‘twin’ physicists won Best Character of the Year at the VGX 2013 Awards, and they’ve won 5th place with 22.4% on this list. Wins, won, will win … I guess the only constant is that, in our universe, we’re quite fond of the Lutece siblings.
4. Sasha & Fiona (Tales From the Borderlands)
A bunch of respondents were enamoured with the con artist sisters of Pandora, which is really cool because now I have something in common with 44 other people. That’s a lot of new friends. Sasha and Fiona are a duo who have their disagreements, but it does nothing to shake their unbreakable sisterly bond — contributing to their popularity.
I have just started playing Tales From the Borderlands and if anything happens to either of them, I will not be okay. I will not.
3. Sans & Papyrus (Undertale)
And on the bronze medal podium are Sans and Papyrus! Somehow, I floated through 2015 without knowing anything about Undertale. I cannot thank the people who wrote the Wiki entries enough.
The brothers were commended by you for their comedic communications and for the way they support and care for each other in the little things and their actions. So you’re telling me there’s more to these cartoon skeletons than meets the yellow and blue eye? Nice.
2. Miranda Lawson & Oriana Lawson (Mass Effect)
The genetically engineered space sisters win second place, garnering 32.3% of the votes. Oriana describes Miranda as her “guardian angel,” which is very fitting for Miranda’s selfless actions across the galaxies to protect her younger sister from exploitation by their egotistical father. Their brains and talents are complementary and unparalleled, allowing them to join forces in one ending of the game. If this survey is anything to go on, that’s what audiences like to see.
However, they will have to defend their title in the Mass Effect series, as the playable renditions of Ryder in Mass Effect: Andromeda have been announced as siblings, too! It’s clear that Bioware know how to write siblings well …
1. Hawke, Carver, & Bethany (Dragon Age II)
… because the coveted rank of first place was nabbed by the Hawke siblings! Bethany, Carver, and Hawke racked up 58.4% of the votes for your favorite siblings in games. That’s an astonishing proportion.
Whilst we at FemHype know that some of our readers are Dragon Age fans, the three kids from Lothering can thank their complex characterization, banter, realistic quarrels, and affection for carrying them all the way to the top of the list.
- Cerberus, Nemean, & Orthrus (Astoria: Fate’s Kiss)
- Alex & Jonas (Oxenfree)
- Mio Amakura & Mayu Amakura (Fatal Frame II)
- William Joyce & Jack Joyce (Quantum Break)
- Chrom & Lissa (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
- Lightning and Serah (Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, XIII Lightning Returns)
- Sam Greenbriar & Kaitlin Greenbriar (Gone Home)
- Billy Lee & Jimmy Lee (Double Dragon)
- Junko Enoshima & Mukuro Ikusaba (Danganronpa)
- Francine Garret & James Garret (Fallout: New Vegas)
- Claus & Lucas (Mother 3)
Thank you all so much again for your responses! Please leave a comment or shoot us a message at @FemHype/@_idolon if you’ve got extra thoughts — or even completely new thoughts! You’re all really cool.
Keep an eye out for the second part of “Thick as Thieves,” which will critically analyze your thoughts, crunch even more numbers, and figure out where you’d like the theme of siblings to go next in gaming narratives. Have a good one!
