Sunday Loot

Sunday Loot: Queering Game Jams & Games Journalism

Dragon Age

Happy Sunday, friends! It’s that time again for another roundup of all the super cool opportunities we’ve seen across the games industry. In particular, we’d like to take some time to highlight the inclusive spaces that are specifically looking for your unique work — and they’re paying, too!

With two game jams and three games publications actively working to elevate diverse voices in this industry, we’re all too happy to promote their incredible work. If you like what they’re doing, consider joining their teams! Many are all too happy to pay for your time and creativity, too, which only means more bonus loot. We’re excited to see your work featured!

As always, if you know of an inclusive gaming space or games project you’d love to see promoted on our Sunday Loot series, drop us a comment below or check out our contact list! We’d love to hear from you, especially about new and exciting spaces where all gamers can hang out. ✌

Five out of Ten

Five out of Ten

Five out of Ten publishes the best independent games writing in the world. We offer our writers a blank canvas — as long as you’re writing about video games! We’ll never be the world’s biggest magazine, but we want to be the best, and fairest.

We’re looking for voices from beyond the mainstream. We have a proud history of publishing work from women, minorities, and LGBTQ backgrounds. We strongly encourage these writers to pitch.”

If you’re looking for a place to submit your writing about games while getting paid to do it, we highly recommend this publication! We’ve covered their open submissions in the past, and today, you’ll have another opportunity to potentially be featured in another one of their excellent publications. We hope you decide to apply!

HHMJam

Hispanic Heritage Month Game Jam

“Let’s say you’ve been sitting on some ideas for analyzing popular games through a Latinx Nerd lens — you can use #HHMJam to motivate you to write and pitch those articles to publications. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to make a Sailor Moon/Selena cosplay outfit, but never had a reason to try before — #HHMJam can be your excuse (and I’m personally begging you to try that out because it sounds awesome)!

Start a podcast, plan a Twitter chats (like #BeingLatinxInComics), draw a new panel (or a page!) each day. Celebrate yourself and your community, and CSDN will rally #LatinxNerds to support you!”

After the enormously positive response that last year’s #HHMJam received, the wonderful folks over at @comosedicenerd hope to continue that momentum for another round! Keep your eye on the social media links below and get ready to jump in on all the fun come next month. We’re excited to see what you end up working on!

Rainbow Jam

Rainbow Game Jam

Rainbow Game Jam ’16 is a 2-week game jam to celebrate and promote diversity within the game industry.

The game jam is open to EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE! No matter what your background, whether you are a student, indie developer, AAA, hobbyist, just starting, Journo, Artist, Writer, Pokemon Trainer, ANYTHING, you are more than welcome to participate!”

We are absolutely delighted to share this opportunity with all of you! This particular game jam started about a week ago, but you still have one more week to get your submissions in. Our friend and fellow FemHype writer Alayna (the brains behind QueerlyRepresent.me) will be covering all the games submitted, so you’ll see your work featured here as well! We’re very eager to see what you come up with, because it’s sure to be fantastic.

sub-Q

sub-Q

“We are a market for F/SF, horror, mystery, romance, and mash-up interactive fiction. We encourage work from creators of color, creators from the QUILTBAG community, and creators with disabilities. Intersectionality welcome. Internationality welcome.

Submitted works must include at least a detailed proposal for interactivity. We like beautiful, moving prose, but we also like pulpy fun! Don’t self-reject. Let us see what you’ve got!”

Here’s yet another publication pushing the boundaries of this industry that you can submit to and receive compensation for. Totally awesome, right? You can earn anywhere from $45 to $250 USD, depending on the length and nature of your submission. Check out the links below for further information on that! We hope you decide to submit your work.

Unwinnable

Unwinnable

“You have stories to tell. We want to hear them.

We are always searching for new voices to add to the conversation at Unwinnable and we firmly believe that personal experience is the foundation of a great Unwinnable story.

More and more, we are drawn to this intersection between the culture we love and the lives we live – and  how that intersection informs our actions and influences our decisions. That means everyone has a story. Even you.”

Last, but absolutely not least, is Unwinnable — a space we’ve covered before and continue to utterly love what they’re doing. A small, independent publisher that provides $50 per story, you know you’ll be in skilled company when your work is featured alongside such amazing and dedicated talent. This round will feature their love-themed issue for September. Please let us know if you submit to any of the publications listed here! We’d love to read your work.
